Research Paper Requirements
Your text must be a short story, and you must choose a topic and story from the lists above (either Option 1 or Option 2). No other short stories or topics are permitted. Choosing other stories or another topic not listed above will result in a grade of zero.
You must combine your own thoughts, ideas, and analysis with research. Your paper should neither be completely your own opinions nor totally dependent on research.
You must develop a strong thesis statement that advances some type of argument on your topic and is based on the research you have conducted.
You should use either first or third person consistently. Please avoid the second person completely.
Length: 1500-2000 words (5-8 pages, not including the Works Cited page)
You must use MLA style (8th edition) for your paper format and for documenting your sources.
You must incorporate a minimum of five credible secondary sources from the years 2010-2020 (peer-reviewed articles, scholarly books, or documentaries). The short story does not count as one of your sources, but it should still be cited.
You must introduce and provide commentary for all research included in your paper.
You must cite your sources each time you use them in your paper. (see in-text citation handout and A Writer’s Reference)
You should include a Works Cited page that lists all the sources and the short story you used in your paper in MLA format (see the MLA Quick-Start Guide handout or A Writer’s Reference)
Your paper must be well-organized, thoroughly edited and proofread, and stylistically engaging to the reader.
