This cognitive learning process not only provides an opportunity to learn various learning theories but also allows learning from classmates.
I believe this course is based off the cognitive learning theory as we are the active learners and participants. We have our degree in nursing and are licensed health care professionals but are choosing to go back to school and work off of what we know in order to become stronger individuals. Each of us comes with our own skills, knowledge, and memories that we have learned in the past. Based off of our past experiences and knowledge are we able to construct an understanding of a topic (Lawless, 2019). To understand this theory, the term “metacognition” should be discussed. Metacognition is the awareness of your brain’s thoughts and thought processes. The cognitive learning theory asks learners to look at thinking and mental processes, which can be influenced by external and internal factors (Lawless, 2019). In order to succeed in this class, we have to have the internal motivation and have to remain active in our search for more knowledge. Some characteristics of this theory that make me believe this current course is influenced by the cognitive learning theory is the room for self-questioning and reflection as well as creating assignments that make the students create their own learning games. While we have not begun the latter discussion, we will be. Having students create their own learning game so they can learn the different forms of teaching and ways of learning is an example of the cognitive learning theory.
