What do you see as two examples of the impact of the 19th century Awakenings on American religious culture today? #2 Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “Letter from a Birmingham Jail” highlighted the distinction between the religious practices among white Americans and Black Americans and called out white religious leaders in particular for their neglect of “direct action” for civil rights for African Americans. What values and practices from early American Puritanism, early American Anglicanism, the religious influences at founding of the nation, and the Great Awakenings potentially contribute to both racism in American and its eradication? How does King’s perspective help us to understand white supremacy as an idiomatic example of “religion in America” up to the present day? #3 Some scholars argue that American Puritanism is closely related to the rise of modern capitalism. What are the characteristics of Puritanism seen among the Pilgrims and the Massachusetts Bay colonists that would make scholars come to this conclusion? What specific examples of this legacy of Calvinism do you see in American capitalism today? How, for instance, do Calvinist theological concepts such as the doctrine of predestination factor into the Protestant or Puritan Work Ethic as it plays out in America today?
