1.    Select a topic
2.    Brainstorm the topic – sit in a quiet place and write down everything that comes into your head about that topic
3.    Research the topic and use the information to fill in gaps from Brainstorming
4.    Write your thesis – your thesis should very simply Answer The Question you have come up with for your topic, e.g., Why did early Paleo-Indians cross over to North America?  Thesis: The Paleo-Indians crossed over to North America because they were nomadic hunters. This will be a declarative sentence that encapsulates the idea you are going to demonstrate in the body.

Example 2. Is healthcare an American right? Answer the question. Healthcare is an American right and therefore, should be available and affordable to all people.

5.    Fill in the outline.
6.    Revise your outline after you have written it to ensure that each Supporting Idea that you have logically supports your thesis.
7.    You should have a minimum of one source for this Outline.
8.    Try to use an actual journal, book, or academic based websites. Most online blogs, geo-cities, and other not academic based sites are unreliable.

Outline Format (should be used to organize your thoughts and support material)
I)      Introduction:
A)  Warm them up!
1)    In your first paragraph, warm up your reader to whatever idea you are about to spring on them.
2)  You may want to introduce the timeframe, the setting, the ideas leading up to this one, or whatever else you feel will help them have an idea of what you are talking about when they get to your thesis.
3)  Try to transition to the thesis…”so this leads to the idea…” etc.
4)  Thesis:
(a) Your last sentence or two of your introduction will be your thesis.
(b)  Create a thesis – propose an idea that needs to be demonstrated or ‘proved’.
II)  Body. This will be your first level one header. Example:  History of American Healthcare
A)  Use your first fact, idea, demonstration or support for your thesis.
1)    Write a Topic Sentence that declares why the 1st evidence supports your thesis.
2)  These sentences ‘prove’ your idea by providing ‘evidence’ that your thesis is correct.

3)  You should have a minimum of five sentences per paragraph.
4)  Support the Topic Sentence with details and facts.

2)  Explain and support your second piece of evidence.
3)    Explain and support your second piece of evidence.

3)  Explain and support your third piece of evidence.
4)  Get ready to transition to the next idea that will provide evidence.
III) Conclusion
A)  Re-state your thesis in different words to bring the paper back around, but more importantly: DRAW CONCLUSIONS from what you have read and understand!
1)    You may decide that there are delimitations or limitations to your thesis that need to be noted—now is the time to write them out.
2)  You may also briefly explain that other relevant or opposing views to your thesis.
3)    Leave the reader with something they will not forget—or something that they will have to think about.
4) DO NOT INTRODUCE NEW INFORMATION IN THE CONCLUSION!

Purpose Statement Format
A purpose statement announces the purpose, scope, and direction of the paper. It tells the reader what to expect in a paper and what the specific focus will be.
Common beginnings include:
“This paper examines . . .,” “The aim of this paper is to . . .,” and “The purpose of this essay is to . . .”
A purpose statement makes a promise to the reader about the development of the argument but does not preview the particular conclusions that the writer has drawn.
A purpose statement usually appears toward the end of the introduction. The purpose statement may be expressed in several sentences or even an entire paragraph.
A purpose statement is specific enough to satisfy the requirements of the assignment. Purpose statements are common in research papers in some academic disciplines, while in other disciplines they are considered too blunt or direct. If you are unsure about using a purpose statement, ask your instructor.
This paper will examine the ecological destruction of the Sahel preceding the drought and the causes of this disintegration of the land. The focus will be on the economic, political, and social relationships, which brought about the environmental problems in the Sahel.
Sample thesis and purpose statements
The following example combines a purpose statement and a thesis statement (bold).
Healthcare is an American right and therefore, should be available and affordable to all people. The focus of this paper is to discuss the lack of healthcare in American society today and provide supporting evidence as to why it is an American right and must be made available to all people.
