We are in a historic, strange, and challenging moment –though one we will get through.
What will life on the other side of this pandemic look like in relation to environment and society (our class topic)? In our Zoom meeting we discussed ways this could be reflected on in an essay:
-will being quarantined change our relationships with consumption and/or food/agriculture – if so, how?
-will it change our sense of ecological community and if so, how?
-what will the state of climate change be like…we have seen less pollution and more telecommuting…will some of this keep up as we see what pollution-free or pollution-reduced cities look like? Or will we see climate change ignored or put on back burner as we focus on after-effects of pandemic on societies and economies
-Van Jones discussed ‘disposability’ of people and environment in an early video we watched. Will we learn lesson as we watch how coronavirus and inequality and healthcare interact? African Americans, for example, who are less likely to have healthcare seem to have been hit particularly hard by the pandemic…as have people who live in areas with high particulate pollution. What if anything does this mean for environmental justice?
-what about trade in animals and wet markets? While this pandemic could have been a flu pandemic or other virus, it has been traced to likely animal trade…how might this affect how we see these markets and illegal trade in animals like bats and pangolins?
You do not have to write about all of these –trying to put some ideas out there. No research is needed. I am interested in reflections that take into account the sociological ideas and concepts we have learned in this class.
No references needed though if you want to include some that is fine.
Suggested length: around 5 pages double spaced.
Grading Rubric:

Sociological connections: Paper makes clear connections between sociological ideas and concepts from class and text/s (Bell and/or Pollan) 35 points
Grammar: Paper had been proofread and uses proper grammar punctuation, spelling sentence structure. 30 points
