1. When studying social movements, the characteristics of a good research question include using the information accessible to your group and movement, and coming up with the most intelligent question that will make the most of a difference when answered. A researcher shouldn’t waste their time on a study that it’s response will do nothing for its society. According to an article written by Jane Agee of T and F Online, titled “International Journal of Qualitative Studies in Education”, research questions are vital to an experiment because “In qualitative studies, the ongoing processes of questioning is an integral part of understanding the unfolding lives and perspectives of others” (Agee, 2009). All in all, a relevant research question is vital to a social movements cause so they have a direct message to send and a clear motive to put their energy into fighting for.

When it comes to choosing the right Social Movement Theory for a specific aspect of a social movement, there are different aspects that need to be looked at based on the level such as macro, meso and micro levels. One theory that could be most appropriate to explain a specific aspect of a social movement would be the Social Constructionist Theory. The social constructionist theory is the concept that create and accept people into society. The Social Constructionist theory is often relied upon political, history and economic circumstances that can lead to change. For instance, race is a social construct. According to Race and Racial Identity are Social Constructs by Angela Onwuachi-Willig, it states that “race is a social construct, defined by markers such as skin color, hair texture, eye shape, ancestry, identity performance and even name, does not mean that racial classifications are free of consequence or tangible effects (Onwuachi-Willig,2016).” Due to discrimination and racial inequality in the United States, it has led to a social movement that has led to some changes in America such as the civil rights movements. This shows that Social Constructionist theory is the most appropriate theory to explain because society creates constructs that they believe that is appropriate during the time and shows that it is defined by humans and society.
