For this project, we will use primary sources from newspapers to examine globalization in the past century or so. Each student will select a theme and examine newspaper articles and advertisements from the time they are studying. To help you frame your analysis, take as your starting point one of three chapters from the Stearns’ book. Chapter 7 “The 1850s as Turning Point”, Chapter 8 “The Great Retreat” or Chapter 9 “Globalization since the 1940s”. This will help you build your historical context.
1. Select a chapter and decide on a theme or issue from that chapter you want to investigate further. Let me know the chapter and theme.
The next two steps you can do in either order.
2. Find two academic articles, academic websites or books about the topic. You can use the library databases. Find 2 items—article, picture, advertisement—from a newspaper dated from the time period you are studying.
3. Prepare at least 4 Powerpoint slides or a 3-5-page paper that describes your primary sources (items from the newspapers) and the theme that you are examining. Give historical context from the scholarly works that you read. If you decide to write slides, be sure the text is in your own words, not copied from your source. You may quote a source and include a reference.
4. Include a bibliography with at least 2 primary sources and 2 academic secondary sources.
Remember to include author, title of article, title of book or journal, publisher and date for all
your sources. Every newspaper and journal article have this info available in the citation or
description. Do not just give the link to the database, include the publication information.
• For your “Works Cited” or Bibliography, use proper format. I included links for Chicago Style
(History Department Style sheet) and MLA in the “Final Project” folder. Let me know if you have questions.
