Grading: Grading will be based on a variety of criteria including the ability to analyze rather than summarize; use of correct grammar, sentence structure, and spelling; and thoughtful engagement with the sources. Part 2 will be graded on a letter scale.
This paper topic asks you to analyze primary sources associated with American involvement in the Cold War, particularly during the late 1940s and 1950s. Select two of the following primary sources (which can be found on Blackboard, under contents, in the folder associated with this paper assignment):
George Kennan Advocates Containment, 1946
Truman Doctrine, 1947
Joseph McCarthy Describes the Internal Communist Menace, 1950 Federal Loyalty-Security Program Expels a Postal Clerk, 1954
In comparing the two documents you have selected, what can you learn about American involvement in the Cold War? Create a clear, strong argument (thesis) that you then argue with evidence from the two sources. While all the documents differ in some way, make sure you have selected two documents whose contents, together, advance your argument.
Questions to consider (You do not need to answer all of these questions. Your thesis will guide the topics about which you will write):
1) What information do the selected sources offer about the United States in the 1940s and 1950s?
2) What types of sources are you discussing?
3) Who is the author and who is the intended audience?
4) What was the reaction to the primary source and what does this reaction suggest about the issue being discussed?
