Finally, the last idea relates to the above, what have you learned about postpartum depression in terms of predispositions and causes? Is it more likely in women who were previously depressed? Does it ever or frequently occur in women with NO mental health history? Is there a related phenom for men after the child is born if they are caregivers, too? That would indicate it has a lot to do with the stress of child-rearing and less to do with hormone changes. If only women experience this uptick in depression after birth, when the family is nuclear, then it is more likely to be a hormonal or social-role thing.
