First part: portfolio statement(650 words): I uploaded example
“Portfolio Statement,” a mini-essay of at least 650 words (with a word count included) explaining what you have learned in this course about yourself as a writer, about your writing, and about writing in general.
To help you generate material for this portfolio statement, consider the following
kinds of questions:
1) What do you see as the most powerful or memorable learning experiences you’ve had in this class (consider all the steps of writing the essays, reading the sample essays and writing the RRs, peer
review, feedback from Steve, class discussions, etc)?
2) Do you see academic research writing in different ways than when you started the course, and if so, how?
3) What do you see as the most important skills you’ve been developing as a writer in this class?
4) What patterns do you notice in the writing you’ve done this semester, both in what you wrote about and how you wrote?
5) Do you see any changes or improvements in your writing this semester, and if so, what are those changes and how did they come about?
6) How do you feel about this body of work as a whole? What do you now see as your strengths as a writer, and what areas do you still need to improve?
7) How might you apply the writing skills you learned in this class to future classes or writing?
You don’t need to answer all of these questions specifically, but use them to generate material toward a cohesive and well-crafted mini-essay.
second part: this part is reading The Curious Researcher then make response:
Read the introduction to The Curious Researcher, including the sample research essay called “Theories of Intelligence” posted on D2L in a single document. Write at least 300 words total in response to this reading, separated into 2 parts (which can be 2 different paragraphs of at least 150 words each).
The 1st part of your writing should respond to the first 6 pages—these are from the introduction to a textbook called The Curious Researcher. You can describe or highlight some of the key ideas Ballenger makes about research essays and his strategies for writing them well. You can also give your perspective/opinion about what he’s saying—do you agree or disagree with anything he says, and if so, why?
The 2nd part of your response should be about the model essay that Ballenger himself wrote called “Theories of Intelligence” (disregard the “exercise 2” instructions and just read the essay itself). In this part of your response, describe the central idea (main point) of “Theories of Intelligence,” and how this central idea is supported by a combination of personal experience, observation, and research. Also consider: how is this essay an example of the kind of research writing Ballenger advocates for in the first part of the reading.
Third part: this is only reading one essay then make response: This is example
Where’s the Justice for Women in Rap? : The essay’s central idea is that the rap & hip-
hop music industry still shows misogyny and sexism against women, despite often advocating for
racial and economic justice. I like how the writer begins by expressing her deep devotion to rap
music—this gives her insider authority—then describes her observations at a local rap concert in
which the female backup singers were treated like sexual objects. Then the essay broadens out to
show other forms of sexism in the lyrics of some classic and recent rap songs, and in the lack of
opportunities for women performers. I found the most convincing research in the quotes by
women who’ve made it big despite the challenges, especially one by Missy Elliot, but I’d also like
to see a bit more credible supporting research. The essay ends with a powerful call for change—
especially the idea that women shouldn’t be excluded from social justice movements—and I think
it could go even deeper into how this change could happen.
