(1) Text and Footnotes
The structure of your paper must be clear. Use italicized headings for the Introduction, the Conclusion, as well as your paper’s various named main parts (no fewer than two, probably no more than four).
Every thought, fact, etc., that is not your own, must be documented. Remember, also, that there are various types of footnotes you can/should use: bibliographical, documentary, explanatory, and/or tangential. A paper that is not heavily footnoted is not a research paper.
Every piece of illustrative material you use (maps, tables, charts, graphs, images, etc.) must be “labeled” (titled), and EITHER documented with a footnote OR a caption that contains a full citation that indicates the origin of the respective illustrative material.
introduction to the topic and to the paper’s focus (up to two paragraphs)
typology of sources (primary and secondary) (usually in two separate paragraphs)
methodology, thesis (or expository declaration), and preview of structure (one paragraph)
“BODY PARTS” (The following should be repeated for each respective part.)
a clear topic-sentence paragraph that, for example, tells the reader which stage/portion of your paper’s argument has been reached and how this next/new topic/point relates to the thesis (or expository approach) of the paper, as well as (if applicable) to the previous point
a selection of particularly good examples (usually no fewer than three per main part) from your primary sources, which must be CONTEXTUALIZED, PRESENTED, AND INTERPRETED, i.e., linked to the topic sentence of this part. Nothing speaks for itself. Footnoted, of course. This section will be several paragraphs long (i.e., usually one paragraph per primary-source example).
additional information, woven in skillfully, as needed (think: context, process, difference). Footnoted, of course.
either as a part of each evidence-paragraph or as a separate paragraph, a discussion of relevant scholarly/secondary-source statements and/or methodology/theory statements regarding this point of your paper (affirming, modifying, refuting, or … you tell me. Footnoted, of course.
a summary paragraph that makes clear to the reader that and how you have made your point (successfully), followed (concluded) by a sentence that either leads to the next topic/point/chapter of the paper or to the conclusion
CONCLUSION (at least two paragraphs)
reminding the reader of the thesis and the main point(s) made in this paper
outlining perspectives for future research
intelligent (and/or brilliant) concluding remarks
