Pick ONE of the questions below to be the central argument for your research paper which will be based on the play School Girls, or the African Mean Girls Play.
1) How do the race issues reflect/speak to race issues in America today? In other words, compare what happens in the play with what is going on in America. What are the parallels? The risks? The benefits? Don’t just think of this as white vs black. Think outside the box.
2) This semester we’ve look at stories that examine how people create identities and how they want to fit in with ‘normal society’. We’ve examined their struggles and failures and successes and talked about what is at the root of their social and personal issues. How do these characters want/don’t want to fit in with their Dominant Culture? Is anyone actually justified in this? Consider the idea of individualism and the modern need to fit in with a group; to be seen and heard. Examine these motivations, and causes, and succeses/failures.
3) How does hubris (pride) play a role in the downfall of these characters? Consider in this question who, if any, learns something from their actions and becomes a better person. Think about the intersection of race and pride.
REQUIREMENTS:
1) A thesis–driven essay of 7-10 pages that uses at least 5 sources (one of which will be
your primary source).
2) MLA formatting for works cited and in-text citations.
a. Note: A works cited is required listing only the secondary sources you use.
However, if you quote from the play do use MLA parenthetical citations.
3) Your Sources Will Include
a. Your primary source – the play.
b. A magazine article.
c. A peer reviewed/scholarly article
d. A book chapter.
e. A final one of your choosing. It must be a reliable and credible source.
4) Do not use first or second person (I/me/mine/we/ours & you/yours).
a. Write the essay in third person.
5) Careful not to spend the entire essay summarising the story/plot.
6) You are welcome to include references to other characters/short stories we have covered this semester if you feel it would support your argument (this could be considered your fifth source option above). But they cannot be your secondary source.
