PRESENTATION 3: PERSUASIVE Speech
SLO #1: Upon completion, the successful student will prepare and deliver a well-paced 5-8-minute persuasive speech with appropriate eye contact and volume and 2-4 credible sources.
SLO #2: Locate appropriate sources and cite them correctly in a speech.
In this speech, you will be writing and delivering a 5–8-minute persuasive speech using Monroe’s Motivated Sequence to persuade your audience to act differently. Your task is to choose a persuasive topic (based on an action), do your own research and construct an original speech. As with your other speeches, you should then rehearse your speech incorporating what you’ve learned about speech construction, delivery and style.
Choose a topic you feel passionate about and one in which you have some basic (starting) knowledge. As always, keep your audience’s interests in mind. You must have three credible sources and cite them correctly in APA or MLA format in your outline. If you are unsure whether your sources are credible, please review course resources, such as lecture notes and the textbook. You should include between 2-4 credible sources.
HERE ARE SOME VIABLE TOPICS:
Football players and kneeling before games
Proposition Statement (in favor): We believe football players should be allowed to kneel before games.
Proposition Statement (against): We believe football players should NOT be allowed to kneel before games.

Proposition Statement (in favor): We ask that you support presidential candidate (name the candidate).
Proposition Statement (against): We ask that you NOT support presidential candidate (name the SAME candidate as above).

Proposition Statement (in favor) Wearing a mask/ social isolation is necessary to fight the spread of COVID 19
Proposition Statement (against) Overreaction by the media, government officials has created an economic and social disaster from which we may not recover
Organize your speech using Monroe’s Motivated Sequence. For the main part of your outline (and the part you deliver for your speech) includes the steps in Monroe’s: Attention, Needs, Solution, Visualization, and Action steps. Be sure you use logical arguments using evidence from credible sources for your Needs Step and Solution Step in particular. The Visualization step should appeal more to emotions. Cite your sources in your outline and also orally in the presentation. Write your outline using full sentences and paying attention to the correct format.
This assignment will require considerable research and skillful use of the methods of persuasion discussed in the modules and in the textbook. Audience analysis will be particularly important. Use the results of previous audience analysis surveys to help you adapt your persuasive message to your target audience.
How To Construct Your Speech:
Choose your topic, which needs to be a specific action. Keep in mind the interest and knowledge of you and your audience.
Use the library and the Internet to search for 3 credible sources. Credible sources include (but are not limited to): newspapers, magazines, books, original data from professional journals, and credible websites. PLEASE DO NOT use or cite Wikipedia, blogs, WebMD, About.com as they are not credible sources of information.
Organize your speech using the steps of Monroe’s Motivated Sequence.
Add evidence from your sources to support your main points and add any additional explanations, stories or examples. Be sure to cite sources in your outline and, orally in the presentation. Sources should be cited in MLA or APA format. For examples of MLA & APA citations, please consult the documents labeled “MLA examples” and “APA examples” on Canvas. You must have at least two sources
Write your outline using full sentences , paying attention to the correct format and include a reference page. Don’t forget to submit your outline on Canvas via VeriCite prior to giving your speech. You must submit your outline correctly to be eligible to present.
How To Prepare For Your Presentation:
Practice delivering your speech , with your partner, if you have one.
You should rehearse enough for your delivery to be truly extemporaneous. So, rehearse a lot—in front of the mirror, in front of your family, in front of your friends…rehearse!!! THIS PRESENTATION is worth 100 points.
You will be constructing and submitting an outline along with your speech presentation. Your outline should be written in full sentences and should follow the hierarchal roman numeral and letter or number format discussed in module 2 and our textbook.
Here is an example outline Actions . Please use this as a template and follow the structure very closely
Please submit your outline separately to the Presentation 3: Persuasive Speech Outline assignment. Your outline grade will be a part of your Presentation 3 grade (even though you will submit your video and outline separately). THIS OUTLINE IS WORTH 100 points
*Please note you must have a live audience of at least three people and briefly show the audience before you begin. I will not be able to grade speeches without a live audience. This is a university requirement. Speeches without a live audience will not receive credit.
