As you have learned in this class, there is also different types of inmates, staff, programs and punishment philosophies used in different prisons. Here is your opportunity to use your knowledge from class merged with your individual certainty.
Your assignment is to develop (and sketch!) your own “perfect prison”. Your prison design should include the following components:
Describe why you chose the design. (i.e., what is the physical design and structure of the prison, what is the rationale for your design).
Explain how your design fits with (at least) one of the justifications (philosophies) of punishment.
SKETCH: You will need to include a one-page sketch of your “perfect prison”. You can use software (word, excel) or simply draw a sketch. It doesn’t matter if you cannot draw, in fact, this may make it better!!!
Facility characteristics/Functions/Purposes of the design
What types of inmates will your prison hold? What types of staff will your prison employ? What training will staff receive?
What kinds of programming will be available in your prison (if your design does not have any programming, make sure to explain why you made this choice).
This is your opportunity to get creative and propose some new, innovative ideas! I am interested in hearing your thoughts and suggestions for a “perfect” prison design; thus, your proposal does not need to adhere to current laws, practices, and policies. While APA format is not expected, the use of a couple of academic articles to reinforce a point will produce higher grades for you. Referencing class materials (Dr. Smith lecture, textbooks, videos, etc) is also a good idea.
