Introduction to Sociology (SOC-201) Paying for the Party Paper Assignment (Worth 10%)
Due: May 8th, 2019
Throughout the semester students have been reading and discussing the book Paying for the Party: How College Maintains Inequality. Students will incorporate course readings, discussions and their personal college experiences to develop an essay on this book. Papers should identify the main themes of the book and demonstrate how such themes relate to course concepts and their own college experience so far. Students should critically analyze the book and the applicability of its themes to their experiences. Paying for the Party papers will account for 10% of the overall grade in the course.
**Note: If a student is absent (excused or unexcused) when the book is discussed in discussion sections, it is the student’s responsibility to ensure that reading pace is maintained and that the assigned chapters are read.
Assignment Guidelines
Papers need to be structured in an academic format, including an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Students should provide clear connections between the book and course themes, readings, and personal college experiences. Through the adoption of a sociological lens, the students’ writing should convey how the book content relates to their college experience and future goals while highlighting common themes and identifying any dissimilarities or departures from course materials and the book Paying for the Party.
