Literature reviews should show active, critical engagement with the literature being reviewed, and the aim of this assessment is for students to learn how to do this.
The key components of the critical review of a journal article include:
An introduction that includes a few opening sentences that state the article’s author(s) and the title; briefly presents the main aim of the article; briefly summarises the main finding or key argument; and briefly states what your evaluation of the article is. The latter can be a positive or negative evaluation or, as is usually the case, mixed (some positives, some negatives).
The main body of the review, which should be devoted to your synopsis/summary and some evaluation of the article. Given the word limit of the exercise and that you will need to take time to explain each point you wish to make about the article, you are unlikely to be able to include all of the points you might like to make, i.e., so it is best to focus on what you believe to be the most crucial aspects of your evaluation of the article and those which allow you to illustrate your learning on the module (e.g., about the main dimensions of the comparative approach to the study of politics and government).
A conclusion which briefly summarises your evaluation in light of the points made in the main body of the review.
