Description
Reading – Bitter Fruit, pp. 25-63 (Chapter 2-4) Background – In this section of the book, the authors provide an account of the 1944 revolution that overthrew the dictator Jorge Ubico and ushered in Guatemala’s experiment in democratic government, and the authors also provide an account of social and economic reforms pursued by Presidents Arevalo and Arbenz. As you read, zero in on the sections where the authors discuss the reforms (found in chapters 3 and 4). The reforms were designed to address social and economic inequalities within Guatemala and also to make Guatemala more economically independent and less controlled by foreign entities like the United Fruit Company. How did Arevalo and Arbenz go about pursuing these goals. What were the specific steps taken by the Guatemalan government to achieve these goals? Writing- Write a 1-2 page informal response essay that addresses the following question: How did Arevalo and Arvenz go about trying to address the problems of underdevelopment in Guatemala? What were the overarching goals of their policies? What specific actions did the Guatemalan government take under their leadership to achieve these goals?
