Possible topics:

1. In Cormac McCarthy’s The Road, the man is extremely protective of the boy, his son. Even when the boy makes mistakes that can cost them their lives, the man continues to downplay his mistakes and even blames himself on occasion. Given the nightmare world they find themselves in, what do you make of the man’s attitude toward the boy?

2. If McCarthy is attempting to make a statement about the human condition, what is it?

3. In both novels, The Road and A Thousand Splendid Suns, a theme of sacrifice plays a major role. Explain how this concept is the same or different in the two stories. Or, if you would rather focus on only one story, please do.

4. In both books, self-preservation is what many of our characters are all about; no matter what it takes, no matter how you go about it, no matter what you say or do, all is acceptable if it helps you stay alive. Would you agree?
