Question 1: Did Harry make a rational decision?
Student’s Response: ”According to the textbook, rational decisions are a means to an end (Chapter 8 page 233). The means of the decision was establishing a plant in New York to achieve the ends of keeping his family together. Harry was faced with a tough decision. Does he put his career goals before the goal of maintaining a healthy and stable household? Harry made a rational decision. After finding his wife would not move to Kansas City or Las Angeles, he made a personally rational decision (page 233, 245). He placed his personal needs and goals before the recommendations of the committee (page 233).”
Question 2: What model of behavioral decision-making does this case support?
Student’s Response: ”Harry’s decision is supported by the participative decision-making model (page 236). Harry is specifically practicing pseudo participation decision-making (page 237). Harry established a committee to help him make his decision. He has them put in a tremendous amount of work to advise him on the best course of action. Not only does Harry not take their advice he does not involve them in the decision process (page 245). This process is highlighted in the textbook as managers will encourage pseudo participation but leave participants out of the final decision (page 237).”
Question 3: What decision techniques that were discussed in the chapter could be used by the committee to select the new plant site?
Student’s Response: “The committee could utilize the group decision-making process to come to a decision. They could come to a decision either using the majority rule scheme or the two-thirds scheme to achieve their desired result (page 242). The results of the decision would be decided by either a majority vote or a two-thirds vote. The committee could similarly utilize the democratic participation technique to conclude based on everyone’s feedback and collectively make the decision (page 236)..”
