While I spend time describing my experience doing disaster relief associated with an extreme storm, consider the similarities we experienced in the last few years with extreme fires in CA. Climate change will be creating the conditions for more extreme storms and fires, here and around the globe.

Climate Change Explained (05:49)
Watch this great, short video on Climate Change. This will be especially helpful to those of you who are also Advanced Practitioners.
A straightforward explanation of Climate Change: the heat from human emissions is roughly equal to exploding 400,000 Hiroshima atomic bombs every day. Historically, every time carbon dioxide levels increase in Earth’s atmosphere, the average surface temperature increases, ice melts, and the seas rise. https://youtu.be/ifrHogDujXw
Wendy Ring MD MPH “Climate 911” Health effects of Global Warming (57:29)

Consider how Indigenous People think about their relationship to the earth and all its creatures in light of climate change and how this plays out in their most fundamental philosophy. “When the integrity of an ecosystem is guarded, the integrity and very existence of human communities are guarded as well. In a philosophical system that respects other life forms as relatives, an ethic of respect, responsibility and reciprocity automatically follows, mediated by reverence. This is the opposite of the vulgar, endless extraction of resources for short-term economic gain.” Optional: Read the Complete article (Links to an external site.) from which this was extracted.

NURSES AND CLIMATE CHANGE
Lest you think that nurses are not organizing around climate change, let me tell you about some of our collective activities:
The Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments (ANHE), which has a dedicated page on climate change (Links to an external site.) for and by nurses.
In collaboration with Sigma Theta Tau, ANHE has created a set of webinars on Climate Change (Links to an external site.).
A new Nurse’s Climate Change Collaborative (Links to an external site.) has been created and includes the following national nursing organizations:

In California, nurses are part of a statewide coalition advocating for the Governor to stop drilling for oil, promote a fossil fuel-free economy, and help develop a healthy and safe transition for workers in the oil/gas and associated industries to safer and healthier employment. This Coalition (Links to an external site.) includes communities that are directly affected by exposures associated with drilling in the state, workers, health professionals, and environmentalists. (For any of you who are interested in being more involved in advocacy regarding climate change, please let Dr. Sattler know.)
Energy & Health
Energy & Health
Watch this PPT with voiceoverPlay media comment.on the human health risks associated with various energy sources. Note that there is a PPT dedicated to fracking later on in this module.
My PPT talk focused on coal and oil, but this documentary is about fracking. About 20 percent of the oil that is drilled in CA is via “fracking”. Note that you can frack oil, as well as for natural gas. In Los Angeles, they are allowed to frack within mere feet of a child’s bedroom window. There are no “setback” requirements.
WATCH this documentary on fracking in North America https://youtu.be/3BKfEvZ9LxA
Fracking: Shattered Ground (44:33)
Let’s start by looking at three short videos on the basics of fossil fuels and renewable energy. While renewables constitute the smallest percentage of our energy sources, they are also the fastest growing segment of the energy economy and really important for nurses to understand.
Watch each video. They are each about 2 minutes
Renewable Energy Explained (02:40)
This is an unofficial explainer video I created for a college project. I decided to gear it toward TheSolutionsProject.org. The assets went from Adobe Illustrator to After Effects. This animation explains the different types of energy such as, fossil fuels, biomass, nuclear and renewables. https://youtu.be/KEeH4EniM3E

Coal & Gas Extraction in Australia
The Human Cost of Power (16:03) This video focuses on coal, which still fuels about 20 percent of our energy in the US.
Watch this great video made by nurses & a movie producer in Australia titled: “Human Cost of Power” about Coal and Gas Extraction in Australia. The same health threats from these forms of energy exist everywhere.
The coal and unconventional gas industries are expanding massively in Australia driving climate change and harming our health. This short film explores the health impacts associated with this expansion. https://youtu.be/y5DIDUB_RyA

Solutions
The bottom line is that we have to use less energy resources and from mostly sustainable sources. In the module on Greening Health Care, you will find resources for decreasing energy use in health care setting.

Discuss one item from each category
Discussion Prompt Climate Change
Climate change is predicted to have multiple effects. Are you prepared, as a nurse, to address the effects that are likely to be experienced in your community?
Are there ways in which the nursing community can use our trusted voices about health to strengthen climate change policies and practices?
Discussion Prompt Energy and Health
The production of energy has a huge impact on the environment, human health and the well-being of many communities. At what level would you be most comfortable helping to transition to sustainable and healthier energy choices?
Do you know what types of governmental incentives exist in your community, state, country to transition to renewable sources of energy?
