Students will evaluate and analyze their own lives using the lens of sociology. Students will write a short biography wherein they highlight the sociological factors that have influenced their life. These can include social class, religion, race/ethnicity, position in the global social structure, or any other topics covered in this class. Students must identify, define, and apply at least 10 sociological concepts and theories in their analysis. To gain a deeper understanding of sociological forces, students must incorporate at least 3 additional scholarly works in addition to using the course textbook. For example, if the student wishes to focus on racial inequality or gender socialization then the articles should reflect this theme. Finally, students must also address what they have learned about themselves through the information gained in this course and how this knowledge might affect their lives moving forward. Note: Blogs, wikis, personal websites, and mainstream news websites do not count as academic sources.
Papers should be 5-7 pages in length (not including title or reference pages) and in APA format.
Exemplary papers will include:
(1) Cover page formatted in APA
(2) Paper (including: introduction, body, and conclusion) will be formatted in APA with the use of headers and subheaders
(3) Incorporation of at least 10 sociological concepts and/or theories from your textbook (Note: Concepts and theories are the bolded terms in your textbook). Concepts should cover an array of topics (e.g. do not utilize all 10 concepts from a single chapter).
(4) All concepts and/or theories introduced will be formally defined (and cited properly) and well explained prior to application
(5) Application of concepts and/or theories to one’s life will be explained clearly and thoroughly
(6) 3 additional scholarly sources PLUS the course textbook will be clearly incorporated into the paper demonstrated that student engaged in research
(7) Reference page listing all sources used formatted in APA
