Assignment 3
You can only do this assignment after having read up to chapter 4 of our main textbook. Therefore the concert you attend must happen after week 8 of our class. You cannot use older concerts since the goal of the assignment is to attend a concert and pay attention to it using what we have learned in class (not work on a memory of a concert, and analyze it with your new knowledge).
Core curriculum objective AHp:
Analyze arts and/or literatures in themselves and in relation to specific histories, values, languages, cultures, and technologies.
INSTRUCTIONS
Attend a concert/musical event happening after week 8 of our course, and write a brief analytical report addressing themes or concepts discussed in class you consider relevant. Your goal with this essay is to show your understanding of the main concepts presented in our textbook Music as Social Life. Be sure to follow the vocabulary we have developed to talk about music making, and engage on a deep analysis of the music event you chose to report on. Although there is no way for me to police this, I strongly encourage you to attend a concert you would not otherwise have attended. For instance if you love hip-hop or indie rock, try going to an old-time dance, or a salsa night. Make an effort to be out of your comfort zone. Most important, be very aware of everything that is happening around you. Remember, you can have fun in the concert, but you are there to reflect upon it.
REQUIREMENTS
Include the following three sections:
Section 1 Introductory Information: Name of concert/musical event; Take a picture of yourself at the event and place it here (be respectful of others, even if the event has a no-picture policy, take it before it starts, with information that shows (programs, advertising, etc.). Location where you watched or attended this event/concert: Date you watched this event/concert:
Section 2 Most Vivid Impression: Identify one aspect of the concert that you found to be particularly provocative, interesting, relevant, etc. Describe it in detail, where or when it occurred and why it was so memorable.
Section 3 Analytical Report: Connect the class material we have covered this far with the concert/musical event. Analyze it using ideas taken from our textbook. In this section you must demonstrate what you have learned in this course about music making, and that you have mastery over the readings from our book.
The essay should be attached in a word document, of a length between 900-1000 words, doubled-spaced, using Times New Roman, Helvetica or Arial font size 12. Assignments not in Word (.doc) format will not be graded.
Submission is through SAKAI. All assignments will be submitted through this web interface and are due at 11:55pm. The website will allow you to submit your work up to 9am of the next day, but it will be marked as late, and you will automatically lose one point out of 10. NO LATE WORK will be accepted after that.
Be sure to properly cite all of your materials, including external sources that you make reference to: news articles, class articles, peer-reviewed texts, YouTube videos, or even Wikipedia. Be sure to correctly cite these sources in the text of your essay (footnotes or parenthetical reference). Paraphrasing also requires citations. All students should have at least one citation: our textbook. Please use the MLA, Chicago, or APA Style for citation. You can use our class syllabus as an example for proper citations.
