The Moral Machine (http://moralmachine.mit.edu/) is a platform run by MIT to gather answers to moral dilemma scenarios based on the trolley problem (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trolley_problem) as it applies to autonomous (driverless) vehicles. The Discussion Question requirement this week will be to complete a judging session on the Moral Machine platform. Your initial post should detail your approach to the scenarios, what you found interesting, any tough dilemmas you encountered, etc. Copy the permanent link to your results at the end of your initial post (see directions below).
Before starting the scenarios:
-Watch the 45 second video for background on the project.
-Click on the “View Instructions” button at the bottom of the page and read the description under the “Judge” section. The Wikipedia article on the Trolley Problem may also help.
-Ponder for a moment what you consider important in life and death situations. Develop an initial strategy in your mind for making difficult decisions to the scenarios.
When you are ready, click on the “Start Judging” button at the bottom of the main page. There are 13 scenarios to consider in total and each scenario is randomized. For each possible answer to the scenarios, click on the “Show Description” red button to see exactly the consequences of the two actions. There is no time limit, so weigh each scenario carefully.
Once you have completed the scenarios, a “Results” page appears that breakdowns your answers based on a few categories. Review your ratings on each category and consider if they represent your intuitions. Before closing the page, click on the “Link” button at the top of the “Results” page. A small window will pop up that has a URL under the “Permalink to Results” heading. Copy that link and include it at the bottom of your initial post. Including the link in your initial post is required. If you failed to copy your results link before closing the tab, start over and answer the scenarios again.
As for your response posts, review someone else’s results through their link and compare their preferences to yours. Did something surprise you? Feel free to review your friends results to see how you compare to them.
