The 1960s saw lots of protests around civil rights, school integration, against the Vietnam War and demands by LBGTQ and women for more rights. The 1970s saw the city (and nation) moving in a more conservative direction and the city going through a serious fiscal crisis that shattered the city’s urban liberalism and shifted the city towards being a city where the gap between the rich and poor grew.
