Medical Ethics

Discussion Posts You will be asked to write at least 2 discussion posts for each section of the course. So, given that we have five sections, you will need to post at least 10 times throughout the semester. Each post will be 3% of your final course grade. If any extra posts are of sufficient quality, they are going to be considered as extra credit. For each section, the first post must critique an argument found in an assigned reading and the second post must respond to another student’s critique. The discussion posts are going to be monitored for both quantity and quality. The following should give you a rough idea about what is meant by “sufficient quality”: Post 1: A critical reaction to one of the readings for that section.

You must be critical of the argument the author gives in favor of his/her thesis. You may (i) choose to defend the argument by giving reasons in favor of one or more of its premises, or (ii) choose to raise an objection, that is, articulate a worry/problem with it, by providing reasons against one or more of its premises (for example, by giving counterexamples). Post 2: A response to someone else’s post. Do not simply state that you agree/disagree with someone’s post. You must be critical of it (e.g. their conclusion, argument, main point, objection, etc.) You may choose to respond to an objection the student has raised against the author (for example, by showing why their worry may not be really a problem). Alternatively, you may further support the student’s main argument in her post by helping improve his/her argument.

Ethical Theories:
1. Virtue theoy by Vaughn, Virtue Ethics. Respond to claims made by Vaughn He states, “In some ways, subjective relativism is a comforting position. It relieves individuals of the burden of serious critical reasoning about morality.

1a. Respond toJen Augustine : Agree to Points about Kant and catergorical imperatives & Why:

Immanuel Kant sought to develop a system of deontological ethics based on obligation and moral duty; Under this system, all duties are considered to be categorial imperatives, where the right action is expected based on a single moral imperative that overrides desire or utility and become a universal law.

When reviewing this theory using Vaughn’s criteria, I found the following to be true:

Criterion 1: Kant’s theory of categorial imperatives seems to be in line with some of the objective data that exists in terms of moral common sense. His theory believes there should be a single set of moral rules that apply to all people. However, unlike utilitarianism, the moral good should not be based on outcomes, rather, the outcome that would benefit humanity best. In this way, there are universal rights and wrongs that this can be built off of.

Criterion 2: Historically these generally accepted morals come from some form of religious rule, but Kant preferred that these morals should come from a more secular, universal place that could be applied more broadly to humanity as a whole. However this theory is assuming that all people would embrace the same universal moral truths out of a sense of duty, and with so many variables to consider, the theory shows itself as flawed. If a particular society embraced a moral norm that is by nature flawed, then applying that “common sense” would result in a flawed application of Vaughn’s first prong, rendering Kant’s categorial imperative flawed as a result.

Criterion 3: On Vaughn’s third prong, I believe Kant’s theory passes and provides a resource that could be used to address the problem of immoral actions in a society, but this of course would rely on the other two prongs being true. As shown above, it fails on the second, therefore the entire theory is flawed.

Autonomy & Consent:
2. Write about Deep Value Pairing : Robert Veatch . Veatch proclaims that we should move from a system of informed consent to a system of deep value pairing. What are veatch proclaimations? Wha is deep paing? Descrbe the consquences of Veatch theory of Pairing.

2a. Resond to: Abandoning Formal Consent: Cara Mcguire
agree or disagee with statment below and Why?
Autonomy is frequently mentioned in the medical aspect, as autonomy is the patient’s independence and individuality and independent decision-making. As for approval, it is an independent approval that the patient decides in his favor. It is an independent approval issued only by the person concerned, the sick person is only able to give this decision and autonomy. The approval is considered completely complete independence from the right of the sick person in the medical field, as well as autonomy, only for the benefit of the injured person and the independent. This is a great advantage that the medical side can include. It is the right of any sick person to make the decisions he wants, and also to give him complete privacy.
