WORLD LEISURE: A CULTURAL PERSPECTIVE
LEISURE ACTIVITY/PURSUIT PAPER & POSTER
Leisure Activity/Pursuit Paper (50 points): This assignment is intended to foster exploration and understanding of a particular leisure activity and/or pursuit, including history, cultural origins, contemporary form and issues surrounding the activity and/or pursuit. Students are to develop a paper on a leisure activity/pursuit, describing the activity/pursuit including its origin and its relationship to the national and regional social institutions (i.e., education, family, economy, etc.). It is expected that the student will integrate course readings, discussions, and contemporary issues into the paper/presentation.
The paper is to be 2-4 pp. typed, double-spaced, in 12 point Times New Roman font with 1” margins all around. It is
expected that information will be taken from a minimum of three sources for this paper and the sources should be cited in the text and a references page should be included at the end of the document that includes complete citation in APA format. For a guide on APA formatting, visit: https://eiu.libguides.com/c.php?g=926444
The paper scoring rubric is included on page 2 of this document.
NOTE: the 2-4 page limit does not allow for redundancy in writing if the student is to fully address the topic.
Leisure Activity/Pursuit Poster (25 points): The poster should be developed using a single slide in MS PowerPoint, saved as a PDF and submitted to the d2l dropbox titled “Leisure.Activity.Pursuit” [same as the paper submission]. The poster should be developed to be eye-catching and to highlight the thesis
and main ideas in the associated paper using imagery with limited text. Think of the poster as if you will be presenting it. The poster should provide key visual and textual cues that help organize and tell the story. The poster should be something that the author/creator could use as a visual aid in telling the story that comprises the associated paper. A small section of the poster, no more than 1/8th of the visual display, should be designated to “Links,” where a list of URL’s is provided that direct the viewer to websites that are informative and perhaps entertaining (e.g., videos, blogs, newspaper articles, …). A small section of the poster, no more than 1/8th of the visual display, should be designated to, “References,” where the references from the paper should be provided, as they are provided in the paper (i.e., in APA format).
The instructor will have read the paper before seeing the poster, so excessive text should not be necessary. The poster will be graded primarily on how well it conveys key information from the paper visually, without using excessive text. Excessive text will be downgraded. The poster scoring rubric is included on page 3 of this document.
