Leadership Discussion Board response to classmates

According to the Vroom-Jago Contingency Model (Daft, Chapter 3), leaders should choose one of 5 decision-making styles based on situational factors including how important the decision is and the need for follower support. Describe a decision you (or a leader you know) recently faced, identify which decision style is appropriate and why.

Often in aircraft maintenance, issues come up that need more input than others. A complex problem usually calls for a leader to use the Facilitate style of decision making. The leader will gather a group of technical experts and discuss the issue and solicit input based on the system knowledge of those assembled. The team leader “presents the problem to a group in a meeting, defining the problem to be solved and the boundaries within the decision is to be made.” (Daft, 2018, p. 82). The idea is to gather input from the members and come up with a plan to troubleshoot the malfunction. Using the facilitate style allows the team members to have a direct say in the plan and helps ensure buy in because they will actually execute it. The book asks the question: “If the leader were to make the decision alone, would subordinates have high or low commitment to the decision?” (Daft, 2018, p. 83). The team generally performs at a higher level when the believe their inputs have been taken into account.
