First, open and read the document, “Key Facts on TV Violence.”
Second, open and read the document, “Content Analysis.”
Third, watch a child’s cartoon that is at least 20 minutes in length. You should be able to find a suitable cartoon on cable or Netflix. The cartoon must be for children (10 years and under) and not for adults or all ages. You will receive a score of zero for this lab unless the cartoon is specifically for children aged 10 and under.
Next, open Word on your computer. Download and open this document in Word. Type in your answers beneath each of the steps below. Save your document in Word format for your protection.
Step 1: Briefly state your definition of violence. Note: Every instance of what you identify as “violent” in Step 5 (below) must agree with your definition of violence.
Step 2: What was the name of the children’s cartoon you watched? Note: The cartoon must be for children and not for all ages. If you are in doubt, you should be able to get this information when you find the citation necessary for the show’s demographics. Also, the cartoon should be no less than 20 minutes in length.
Step 3: What are the show’s demographics? In other words, what is the targeted age range? Don’t guess. Find a credible online source, report who that source says is the cartoon’s demographic, and cite the source in the body of your paper (KidsMania, 2014). And then in your references, give me the full citation in APA style and the URL so I can verify your source.
Step 4: Cite your source for the show’s demographics by giving me the URL at which you found the information–it must be a URL that I can open and read the article. Please note that I will check the URL and if I find that your citation doesn’t mention a targeted age or says that it targets all ages or adults, and therefore is not specifically for children (i.e., under the age of 10 years) you will earn zero points for this lab.
Step 5: Watch the children’s cartoon again and record all the incidents of violence that match your definition of violence. You must (1) name the specific violent acts, (2) identify who is the target of the violence, and (3) identify who is the perpetrator.
Step 6: Summarize your findings. In other words, based on what you watched do you find the show violent? Why or why not?
Step 7: Conclusions. If you were writing this to the parent of a small child, what you recommend to them about allowing their child to watch that specific cartoon?
Step 8. Identify your references. Cite any sources in APA style and provide the URL of the online source so I can verify your source.
Step 9: When you are all done, copy and paste this document with your answers into the Lab 1 Quiz.
