1. Preparing to observe:
a. Begin by reading “Administration of the Scale” on p. 9 of the ITERS booklet
b. Read the entire ITERS scale, including all Items and Notes for Clarification
c. Read the “Scoring System” section on p. 11 of the ITERS booklet
d. Make copies of the ITERS scoresheet at the back of the booklet (Scoresheet pp. 1-14)
e. Determine where you plan to observe and which age group
i. At the CDFC: Observe between the hours of 7:30 AM-12:30 PM and 3-5 PM
1. Ring the doorbell and show your student ID
2. Check in at the front desk
ii. At another center
1. If you work in a center or can gain access to one, you may complete this
assignment in a classroom of your choice
2. You may NOT complete the ITERS on your own classroom, as it is difficult to be
unbiased
3. Make sure you fill out all the center information on p. 1 of the scoring sheet and
include an email address or phone number of a contact who can verify your
observation
2. Completing the observation:
a. You should observe for a MINIMUM of 3 hours
i. This time may be split across several different observation sessions
ii. You may need to observe for more than 3 hours to complete the assignment
b. Begin by filling out all the descriptive information on Scoresheet page 1
c. Select at least 25 out of the 33 items to observe and rate
i. Subscales and items are listed on p. 15 of the ITERS booklet
ii. You must include a minimum of three items from each subscale
d. For each of your selected 25 items:
i. Begin by reading indicators in the inadequate (level 1) column
ii. If there is an *, be sure to read the related Notes for Clarification
iii. Use a pencil to check Y or N for each indicator in the level 1 column on your scoresheet
iv. Progress to the next column of indicators and score in the same manner, checking Y or N
for each indicator; Repeat for levels 5 and 7
v. Write notes about your observations for each item within the item box on the Scoresheet
3. Scoring the ITERS:
a. Reread the “Scoring System” section on p. 11 of the ITERS booklet
b. Use the “Scoring Cheat Sheet” at the end of these guidelines to help you determine the correct
overall rating for each item
c. Calculate average subscale scores
i. Add up the total scores for each item rating
ii. Divide by the number of items scored
d. Record average score for each subscale on the Scoresheet
i. Space and furnishings = bottom of Scoresheet p. 2
ii. Personal care routines = bottom of Scoresheet p. 4
iii. Language and books = bottom of Scoresheet p. 6
iv. Activities = bottom of Scoresheet p. 10
v. Interaction = bottom of Scoresheet p. 12
vi. Program structure = bottom of Scoresheet p. 13
e. Complete the “Total and Average Scores” table on Scoresheet p. 14
4. Writing the paper:
a. Follow the format guidelines and paper outline noted below
b. Begin by introducing the ITERS and provide background information about where you
completed your observation (i.e., the information on p. 1 of the Scoresheet)
c. Write one paragraph for each of the six subscales, for a total of 6 body paragraphs
i. Write the average score for each subscale and provide justification for the score based on
your observation and notes on the items you rated
ii. Write a recommendation for improving the score of the item with the lowest rating in the
subscale
d. Conclude by writing your top three recommendations for improving the overall quality of this
classroom and three things that you learned by completing this assignment
5. Submitting your assignment:
a. Attach your paper as a Word or PDF document to the assignment box on Blackboard
b. Scan your completed Scoresheets and upload as an additional PDF attachment
c. Submit both the paper and scanned Scoresheets as one assignment
