I enjoyed this week’s interview activity and getting to know more about the Student Affairs/Profession. This assignment was very interesting and affirmed my commitment and desire to this profession. The word professional comes from the root word profess, meaning to declare openly or affirm allegiance to knowledge claims. (Schuch, Jones, Torres, 2017). For this activity I selected to interview the Dean of Counseling at Mt. San Antonio University due to my professional interest in this service area and department. Furthermore, as I was researching the Student Affairs/Services division, I found that is “a discreet group of practitioners who possess a specialized boy of knowledge allowing them to engage in a narrow field of work” (Schuch, Jones, Torres, 2017). The Student Services department is very broad and encompasses a wide variety of professional services ranging from Admission and Records, Counseling, Equity, Financial Aid, Health Services, Student Life and Transfer Services, and more. Each functional program and services are specialized for that particular functional area. Moreover, the general standard of each program and service includes student learning outcomes in knowledge acquisition, cognitive complexity, interpersonal development, intrapersonal competence, humanitarianism and civic engagement, and practical competence (Schuch, Jones, Torres, 2017). In preparing for a potential professional duty or position at a higher education institution, and given my counseling experience, the interview with Dr. Francisco Dorame, Dean of Counseling provided great value to the application of everyday work in student affairs. Dean Dorame noted that at every level, “student issues, concerns, and dynamics affect work on a daily basis”. Dr. Dorame revealed the importance of leadership management for the overall component of the counseling department during this difficult and challenging time when the campus is physically closed to student and public access at this time. I asked Dr. Doramane if the demands and duty of providing counseling has changed. The response was quite interesting! Student services are continuing to be utilized on a consistent and daily basis, the center is fully booked everyday and solid for the next two weeks. Student support services are being provided, however the delivery has changed and has adapted to the campus closure by providing counseling services online. Dr. Dorame response shared the sentiment of “leaders solve problems and inspire people”. This reflects the informal theory of leadership based on knowing the people that are being served and goals are being met (Schuch, Jones, Torres, 2017).
