INTERVIEW ASSIGNMENT
The educational objectives of this assignment are to: (1) demonstrate applied knowledge of the course material using an actual interview situation that you may encounter as a social worker; (2) develop your ability to present your ideas effectively in written form; and (3) provide an opportunity to practice paying attention to verbal and non-verbal communication patterns, responding empathically, and building on client strengths.OverviewIn this assignment you will interview an individual over 35 years of age and then write a paper on your experience, addressing information in Part I, II, and III below.
PaperIn Parts I, II, III, please respond to the questions in essay form (use complete sentences and paragraphs; no lists or bullet points) in relation to the interview you conducted.
Remember to use concrete examples and several brief actual quotes from your interview to illustrate your points in each question. Please identify which question you are answering by using the following numbers or questions in your paper:
PART I: (20 points)Description of Interviewee & Interviewer PreparednessIn order to respect the confidentiality of your interviewee, please do not use their real name or any identifying information in your paper.Begin your paper with a brief summary (just a few sentences or paragraph), indicating:1.Who the interviewee is in relation to you, e.g. friend of your parent, next door neighbor, close friend’s uncle, co-worker, etc.,2.Where the interview took place, and how you prepared the space, 3. Any known demographic information, e.g. age, race/ethnicity/cultural background, religion, country of origin, socioeconomic class, and any other relevant identities.
Discuss the four questioning methods from the course you used. Review Questions and Questioning section, and General Principles Regarding the Use of Questioning in Chapter 6 of your textbook. PART II (50 points)
The Interview
1.)Describe communication patterns including but not limited to, the verbal and non-verbal behavior of your interviewee (including the use of silence if relevant). How did you interpret their behavior/message? Were the verbal and non-verbal messages of your interviewee congruent? Include & discuss examples.2.) What did you notice about your own verbal and non-verbal communication patterns? How do you think they made your interviewee feel? Please use specific details from the interview to illustrate your general points/observations.3.) Describe and highlight the responses to your four chosenquestioning methods (Part I) you used during your interview and remember to give examples. 5. What skills did you use to demonstrate empathy in your interview (describe in detail)? How did your interviewee react to your attempts to respond empathically?6. Identify strengths and goals of your interviewee and what impact did this have on your interview?7. Provide examples of your use of SOLER and rapport.

PART III (20points)
Evaluation and Conclusion1. Discuss the following social work concepts: non-judemental attitude, strengths perspective and systems theory and how you applied them.2. Evaluate the components of the interview and choices you made. What 3 things did you learn about yourself?3. Describe your use of time management components including beginning, middle, and end of an interview.4. Analyze your use of verbal and non verbal behavior. Provide examples of your congruence or incongruence. Analyze meta comments made and give an example of how you stayed focused.Conclusion: In what ways might you conduct the interview differently if you were to do it again (i.e., in order to facilitate more effective communication, to avoid empathic failures, to build more on your interviewee’s strengths, prepare differently, etc.)?
