Individual Research Project:
i. Individual Research Proposal (rough draft) …………………… [5 pts]
ii. Individual Research Proposal (final draft) ……………………. [25 pts]
iii. Annotated Bibliography …………………………………….. [75 pts]
iv. Final Individual Research Paper (8 pgs)…………………….. [125 pts]
Individual Research Project Overview:
For this project, you will write about a topic of your choosing that is in your field(major) of study (make sure to avoid banned topics—see Bb). If you are undeclared, then chose a topic in a field you are possibly thinking about majoring in. For this project, make sure to argue why this topic is significant and important. For example, if you are a business and/or marketing major, one possible topic is the importance of social media for businesses and how social media can benefit businesses. See the breakdown below of assignments:
Individual Research Proposal [Rough Draft]:
Worth: 5 points
➢ For this class session, all you need to have is the working thesis statement with three main points. Turn in as either a Word doc or PDF.
o In a previous class, I will assign you a peer-editor (more details to be announced later).
Individual Research Proposal [Final Draft]:
Worth: 25 points.
➢ Part I: A one-sentence working, arguable thesis statement with three main points.
➢ Part II: An outline that is at least ½ page long (double-spaced):
o Make sure your main points and subpoints are clear.
Worth: 75 points.
An annotated bibliography is a short summary and critique of a source. For this class you will need to annotate five sources. Your annotations need to be at least 150 words (not including the citation). At least two need to be scholarly sources and at least two need to be popular sources. The fifth source is up to you, either scholarly or popular. The annotations should include:
➢ A full citation of the source in APA formatting. Include URL’s for online sources.
➢ An annotation. The annotation paragraph should consist of three qualities (all written in third-person):
o Briefly summarize the source including important, necessary information (main points and main argument).
o The positives and/or negatives about the source.
o And finally, in third-person, explain how the source supports (or acts as a counterargument) your field of study (major).
➢ Formatting: The Annotated Bibliography requires a very particular format. Points will be docked if this format is not followed.
Final Individual Research Paper:
Worth: 125 points.
Length: At least 8 pages, double-spaced (Abstract and Reference pages are not included in page length)
Having read the Overview above, make sure to:
➢ Have an arguable thesis statement with three main points stated at the end of the introduction.
➢ For the final draft, there should be at least three scholarly sources (articles, books, etc.) and three popular sources (newspapers, magazine articles, websites, blogs, etc.) with inside-citations.
o When using a source, make sure to briefly summarize/evaluate/and explain how the source backs up your thesis.
➢ In the body paragraphs, make sure they follow the points stated in your thesis statement. If your paragraphs become longer than 3/4th of a page, you need either to split it into two paragraphs or cut down.
o You are allowed to use your Annotated Bibliography paragraphs in this paper. Just make sure to add transitions and make it flow (it should not feel like it was copy-and-pasted when reading).
➢ Make sure you have a counter-argument present.
o This essay should be in APA formatting. APA formatting requires a cover page, an abstract, and a reference page. Look at the APA formatting templates and notes on Bb.
