Read and re-read all three assigned texts: “On Being Brought from Africa to
America,”
use that particular critique for the prompt on Wheatley. Be sure you have a
copy and read, and re-read Levernier’s critique.
In answer to ONE of the following prompts/questions, write a
analytical essay with evidence from texts, the poem, and the
critique or the source. The evidence from each text, four to six quotations or paraphrases
require in-text citations. Use Modern Language Association Documentation (MLA
DOC) for each in-text citation. Double space.
Recurring mistakes in documentation in some papers: APA documentation
instead of MLA. APA or a combination of documentation styles will be marked
wrong and you will lose points. No dates, commas, p’s or pgs or page. Do not
quote the parentheses. Quotations go before and after the actual quote, not
after the parentheses. Punctuate correctly. Format the works cited page, also
written in MLA style of documentation. Do NOT include urls.
Recurring grammatical errors in some papers: capitalize proper nouns, spell the
authors’ names correctly, subject-verb agreement, and fragments.
Do not use personal pronouns. You are not writing an opinion paper but an
argument, proving a thesis you create in response to one of the prompts. Do
not write that you agree or do not agree with the prompt. Answer it.
PROOF READ and a lot of the mistakes and errors can be corrected by you on the
spot.
Most important: write a thesis in answer to the prompt/question and support it
with evidence from both texts. And you are writing an argument, not a summary
or your opinion, not agreeing or disagreeing. That is not the final exam. You will
lose points if you do and there is no second chance. You can write one draft
before the final one, as stated but that’s it.
PROMPTS/QUESTIONS:
1. In James Levernier’s critique on Phillis Wheatley’s poem, “On Being
Brought from Africa to America” he writes, “Wheatley knew that the
slaveholders responsible for her abduction from Africa acted out of greed,
not piety, and that they were motivated by evil, not goodness” (70). Use
what she says in her poem and Levernier’s analysis of her poem prove the
true intentions of the slave holders, not the arrogant rhetoric they spouted
about saving “pagan” souls.
