Unfortunately substance abuse is becoming an increasing major problem today and I believe it’s only going to get worse. According to Tariman, studies have shown the prevalence of substance abuse can be as high as 32%. That number is mind-blowing to me. Its compromises the quality of care to our patients. Working alongside someone with an addiction changes the culture of a unit or department. Nurses that abuse of substances have can have a higher rate if call-outs or overtime. Job performance becomes erratic due to inability to maintain control. This tends to cause inappropriate behaviors, arguments with co-workers, and isolation. These nurses usually have a lot of medical errors or are always willing to assist in “wasting.”
I have worked alongside 3 nurses in different settings who abused drugs. We get educated on signs and what to look out for and all 3 times I had no idea and when I looked back it was so obvious. Which makes me think if we just close our eyes to the obvious. They were all very different how they went about their addiction but they all had one thing in common. They were hard to work with. Its like everyday was different some days they were loud and obnoxious, or quiet and isolated, or angry. These nurses had more ancillary staff complaints. They would not want to work alongside them because of the attitude and negative energy they let off. If I needed assistance at times I would just rather wait than ask for their help. That clearly resulted in a delay of care which negatively affects the patients. Working alongside that negative person brings down the moral in a unit.
