Outline for a Literature Review
1. Introduce the Social Problem
The introduction establishes the context of your review to the reader.
a. Define the topic of your study and provide any background information that helps your reader
to understand the topic.
b. Explain the reason for reviewing the literature on this social problem.
c. State the research question for the review.
2. Review and Analyze the Journal Articles
Analyze the information you have gained from reading your chosen five journal articles. Review articles published within the last five years and never more than 10 years old. Refer to research in the past tense, since they are completed.
a. Begin with an explanation of how you have organized your literature review and describe the results from articles that provide answers to research question.
b. State how many articles you reviewed and how the literature review groups articles by similarities based on the results.
c. Head each paragraph with a descriptive title related to the review results. Include the following:
d. Describe the first identified idea and compare, contrast and/or connect the articles.
e. Describe the second identified idea and compare, contrast and/or connect the articles.
f. Describe the third identified idea and compare, contrast and/or connect the articles.

Conclude or Summarize Article Findings
This is the last paragraph of your literature review. In this paragraph, it is important to summarize the main findings from the articles that you reviewed and to point out the information that you found particularly important to know that answered the inquiry question that you established in the first paragraph of your review.
g. Summarize in your own words the most important parts of the five articles. Make sure the research articles you are using are full-length articles and not just abstracts.
h. Based on your research into the current literature about your social problem, what is known about this topic?
i. Is there general agreement among the authors / researchers of all the journal articles? If there is disagreement, what were some possible reasons for this?
a. Where is the research on your topic weak? What are some limitations or problems within the research? Which limitations/ problems did the authors mention? What limitations or problems were there, but were not mentioned by the author?
j. What is still unknown about this topic?
k. Conclude your paper by connecting your research questions to the context of the findings of the
literature review.
