Welcome to ENG/100 – Critical Reading and Composition. This course is part of the Phoenix Success Series, and it is the first writing course most students take at the University. Because writing can sometimes be intimidating, this course introduces you to the writing process in a way that helps you develop strategies and skills that support the writing you will do in future coursework and in your career.
Whether you are nervous about your writing skills or you feel pretty confident, this course will ‘meet you where you are.’ You will begin by taking an inventory of your current writing skills so you can locate and use the resources that will be most helpful to you. Throughout the course, you will also create personal journal entries. These won’t be shared with the class, but they are a way to help you become more comfortable putting thoughts and words on paper.
During the course, you will read and compare different styles of writing, create and incorporate fundamental aspects of written responses, and identify and use resources that guide good writing. As a final activity, you will write an original essay that demonstrates the skills you’ve learned throughout the course.
There are many resources and assistance available to help you be successful in this course and beyond. Your faculty member can answer questions and guide you, and the University Library and its librarians are at your service. This course will help you find your voice and begin your academic writing journey. Enjoy!
