Ethos follows the idea that an argument should be given by a trustworthy person or group and that the more people know they can trust someone, the more convincing the argument becomes.
This essay will ask you analyze how two sources build ethos and to evaluate how well you think they build this. You will be required to critically examine and evaluate both sources in order to determine which you think provides the best ethos and why you believe so. This will be used in order to critically examine just how and why a source may be reliably used in gain information.
You will find, examine, and quote from two sources. These may be two news sources (LA Times, CNN, Fox News, etc.), two periodicals (educational or professional journals), or two magazines (Time, Life, National Geographic, etc.) so long as the sources focus on giving news or information to a reader.
Using whatever sources you’ve chosen, you will select one recent piece (an article/story/essay) from each source and use them to develop whether or not ethos is being used well. This can include looking at the larger news source, the author, or the information or resources used in the piece. You may use other sources that reflect on, comment on, or analyze the news source in order to develop how trustworthy that source is or you may look up information on the author. Quote and cite as needed.
An important part of evaluating is to BE CRITICAL. Even if you trust some parts of a piece, do you trust all of it? Do not be afraid to say that while you find one source to be more trustworthy, it still has issues or flaws. Imagine giving honest but warning reviews to potentials readers.
Follow this outline:
Introduction: The introduction will set up the sources/articles you will discuss and contain a thesis that details what your paper will argue about each source and what your evaluation is. Be sure that your thesis presents one of the sources as being more trustworthy than the other.
Body Paragraphs: The paper will have at least 5 body paragraphs following the order below. You may write more if needed or break up these points into several paragraphs.
Body 1 & 2: Body paragraphs 1 and 2 will focus on your first source. You will spend at least one paragraph analyzing how the source builds ethos by showing and discussing the ways that the source is made trustworthy. You will then use the next paragraph to immediately evaluate how well you feel this source used these methods of ethos building. Evaluate whether you fell that the source is made reliable through these and why/why not.
Body 3 & 4: Body paragraphs 3 and 4 will focus on your second source.
(It does not matter which source goes first, but you should make sure that your evaluations line up with your thesis. One should be evaluated to show why it is more trustworthy.)
Body 5: You will spend at least one paragraph after evaluating each source to directly compare/contrast the two sources and discuss why one is more trustworthy than the other. This should directly line up with your thesis and the idea you wish a reader to know. Use this paragraph to briefly discuss both sources at once and discuss your reasoning.
Conclusion: Wrap up your paper by giving the reader something to think about or do in the future concerning the ideas you’ve discussed.
