HOW TO MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE

The late Fred Rogers, the host of the TV show Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, famously said, “When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’”

This quotation is often shared on social media when stressful or chaotic events are happening, and the words are a clever way to soothe children’s fears. As adults, we have an opportunity not just to see helpers but to be helpers, in ways big and small.

For this assignment, I’m asking you to identify one concrete action that people like us (students, workers, family members) can take to help improve the world during the COVID-19 pandemic. Please find at least one piece of online research to support your claim that this action would be helpful, and present your idea in a clear and readable discussion post here.

This action would benefit communities because local newspapers perform an important service. News is important all the time, but especially during times of crisis, and local newspapers are the best source of community news when important things are happening in a region. The newspaper industry has been suffering lately, and the worst effects are felt by local papers, not just the big famous national papers. Subscribing to your local newspaper will provide a small financial boost for local journalism, and after the shelter-at-home orders are lifted, your subscription will help them set their ad rates, too.
