Your final major assignment for the semester is to craft a research paper. As Laurence Greene (2010) notes in his textbook Writing in the Life Sciences: A Critical Thinking Approach, research papers “report original studies; thus, they are the primary and most precise sources of scientific knowledge” (p. 15). Consequently, an argument you construct should be distinct, clear, and science-related; it can be based either on your major or field of interest (e.g., your current or potential career). After carefully developing a working thesis, you should support it with authentic relevant evidence and achieve ethos, pathos, and logos in your work.
Your research paper should start with a paragraph-long abstract where you provide a succinct overview of the main points that you plan to address and develop in your work. It is a good idea to write an abstract after you finish writing the entire research paper, so it represents the overall discussion as accurately as possible. Your paper can but does not have to follow the IMRAD structure widely used in the sciences.
Your essay should be carefully formatted in APA style, typed in 12-point Times New Roman font, double-spaced with standard one-inch margins, numbered pages with headers (that consist of a short version of your title), and free of spelling and grammatical errors. Remember to include the References page with all the materials listed in alphabetical order.
Your evidence should come from minimum 8 authentic (credible) sources, and you should have both primary and secondary sources. You are required to use a variety of sources:
(a) three scholarly/peer-reviewed journal articles;
(b) two primary sources (e.g. interviews, surveys, governmental documents/reports, memoirs, etc.);
(c) the rest can range from a website article to a newspaper article, to a book (whether it is an encyclopedia, a textbook, or another regular book with informative or analytical discussion), to a documentary, etc.
(d) also incorporate at least 2 visual aids and remember to refer to them, cite them, and explain their purpose within your work.
You can find necessary materials using the John Jay online library database.
One of the main goals of this final project is for you to demonstrate your competence as a researcher who has the ability to peruse, inform, analyze, synthesize, and integrate a great variety of credible sources not only to prove his or her central claim (thesis statement), but also to bridge existing gaps in your field of study and discover the truth.
Thus, your ultimate goal is NOT to restate what has already been discovered and said, but rather critically analyze the gathered information to make your own observations and conclusions (decisions) that serve the best interests of society!
Final Notes: When you give quotations, summaries, or paraphrases of other authors’ ideas (which a successful paper MUST), please ensure you provide their last name, the year of publication, and page number(s).
Another remark: you can use block quotes only twice in the entire essay, and remember to follow the “quote-sandwich” rule, where you introduce, use, and then explain a quote or another type of evidence.
