Submission Format: Word document (no google docs, pdfs etc.) for the paper which should be submitted
in the Assignment tab under the “Health Intervention Paper” assignment on NYU Classes. The forum post
will be submitted in the “Forums” on NYU Classes.
Assignment: This assignment consists of three parts: 1) the paper and 2) the forum initial post 3) the
forum response post to a classmate. For this paper, you will be writing about a current issue in public
health you think needs to be addressed. You will need to provide relevant background information and
evidence to support the health issue you select. The proposal should also include a public health
intervention targeting the health issues, including activities, possible partners, and possible challenges.
The Health Intervention Paper is due on 5/8 by 5:00pm EST on NYU Classes under the corresponding
assignment. For the initial forum post, you will post the highlights of your proposal in a discussion board
forum in the format of an academic journal abstract (by 4/30 @ 5:00pm EST at the latest). Then you
must respond to one of your classmates by 5/5 @ 5:00pm EST.
Paper Sections & Instructions:
You should address the four sections below and the questions detailed under each section thoroughly.
− A) Background: What is the current issue you have selected? Why is this an important topic to be
addressed (this should be backed up by research and statistics that demonstrate why this is an
important and pressing issue that needs to be addressed). Who is affected by this issue and the
general demographic information (i.e. age, race/ethnic groups, other characteristics that are
relevant to public health)? Make sure you tell us why we should care and how this affects public
health.
− B) Current Situation: Who is currently working on this issue (government, NGO’s, other health
organizations etc.)? What is being done (i.e. what interventions are currently being done)? Has
it had any effect so far (have the interventions been effective- you need data, research, and
statistics to back this up- don’t just say yes or no?
− C) Key Players: Who else should be working on this intervention (do not restate who is currently
working on this- you already should have addressed this in the current situation section). What
groups, organizations etc. would be beneficial to have working on this health issue and why? What
should they be doing (be specific here)?
− D) Public Health Intervention: Provide concrete steps about what could be done to improve this
health issue. For example is it a communications campaign, education initiative, infrastructure
issue etc (there are many interventions that could be created for all topics- you should think about
what is needed and what would be most effective)? You need to be very specific in detailing
exactly what the intervention is and what steps would be taken to implement it. How would you
measure the effectiveness of your proposed intervention? What challenges and barriers might

you face in implementing this intervention and how might you overcome these? Are there groups
that might benefit more or less from your proposed intervention?
I would encourage you to be creative! You can expand on what others have done, but try
to add an element that you come up with that can be practically implemented. You should
reference and cite what has been done and how you are improving on it or providing a
new intervention.
You will need to do significant outside research on your topic. Remember to use credible sources (i.e.
government websites, peer reviewed journal articles). Please consult the first powerpoint of the
semester (under the class #1 tab under the resources section on NYU Classes) for tips on searching for
scientific literature. Also, this is a good refresher for citing/referencing and scientific writing (i.e. do not
use contractions, use topics sentences, proofread etc.).
Forum Post & Response Instructions:
Initial Post (70 points): Please create an initial forum post (approximately 200-250 words) with the
highlights of your proposal. Be sure to have at least 1-2 sentences per section of the paper. This is a
good exercise in summarizing the main points of your paper. Think of this as writing an abstract for a
journal article. You should provide the main highlights to each section of the paper. You should include
in-text citations and a reference list at the end. To practice synthesizing your points like you would do
for a journal article, please format your post in the following manner.

Response Post (30 points): Respond to at least one of your classmate’s final paper proposals. This post
should be between 50-100 words. Make sure you are respectful in your posts. This post may include
insightful comments and questions about the post etc.
**All students should do their best to monitor their forum to see the feedback that other students are
providing. This is an opportunity to get feedback from your classmates and to engage in a critical
discussion on your topic of choice.
Remember: Put your name on the assignment! This assignment should be completed alone, without
consultation with other students.
Other Info: Do not plagiarize. All assignments will be checked with Turnitin. As a general rule of thumb,
if you are unsure if you need to cite, you should err on the side of caution and cite! Please use APA or
AMA format. The reference list does not count towards the page length requirements.

note: I am providing some readings but you must have pick what you will write about because i have to email the professor which topic i will talk about and focus on the parts because she asks about the initial post which is due 2 days from now
