Considering this week’s readings on property, race (racial banishment), segregation, and displacement: What are some examples of strategies that cities use to keep undesirables out of certain places? These places can be residential neighborhoods, public commons, schools, or commercial centers to name a few. Has the response for shutting cities down due to COVID-19 been equally enforced in all communities? For example, since moving to Irvine to go to school here, I noticed there’s little to no public parking available in Irvine and even some public parks have fees to park your car like Mason park near campus. Those who live nearby can avoid paying fees by walking or biking there, but, visitors are subject to fees. Around the time I moved up here, I saw this news article in the OC Register (Links to an external site.) reporting that several black Los Angeles Chargers professional football players were denied opportunities to buy or rent homes for their families in Irvine and Newport Beach after the team recently moved from San Diego to Carson, despite being wealthy professional athletes. By limiting opportunities for minorities who are confined to certain neighborhoods, it limits where Black and Brown children go to school and so on perpetuating this cycle of racial capitalism even though there are no longer redlining (racial segregation) laws on the books anymore. Please explain your answers and remember you only have to answer ONE question. ***Alternatively, I recognize this is a difficult topic to discuss so I wanted to provide a third option for this week’s post. If you prefer, you can use this week’s post to reflect on your experience thus far as a student during a global pandemic and the uncertainty that lies ahead.
