ART 475 – ART OF THE BOOK
RESEARCH PAPER FORMAT
Begin your paper with a title page that should include, centered, the title of your paper and, in the lower right-hand corner, your name, the course number and title, and the date.
PLEASE USE JSTOR.ORG FOR RESOURCES. AND CREATE A BIBLIOGRAPHY
Your ten pages of text (at minimum) begin next. Put the page number in the top right corner (except for the first page, which is unnumbered; in Word, use “different first page” function). Start your text at the top of the page. Tab once to indent each paragraph and don’t insert an additional space between paragraphs. Use a standard 10-, 11-, or 12-point font. Supply one-inch margins all around. Double space.
When you mention a work of which you’ve included an illustration, you must refer to that illustration the first time (and only the first time) you cite the work, inserting the figure number in parentheses before the closest punctuation. Here’s an example:
Dürer included an image of the Scourging of Christ in his Great Passion (Fig. 1), but not in any other printed work.
You must footnote any idea that is not your own, using the Chicago/Turabian style* (select Cite Your Sources in the upper right-hand corner of the Moodle course site). You may not use in-text citations because footnotes are standard practice in arts-related scholarly publishing. It is entirely acceptable to have quite a lot of footnotes. To insert a footnote in Word, select References followed by Insert Footnote. Word automatically synchronizes the footnotes as you manipulate your text.
*The short version of the Chicago/Turabian on-line guide refers to bibliographical entries rather than footnotes. There are two important differences in a footnote:
In a footnote, the author’s first name precedes the last, whereas in a bibliography, it is the other way around.
In a footnote, you must indicate the specific page(s) to which you are referring in addition to the page range of an article or book chapter, whereas in the bibliography, you need only the range.
For example, here is a bibliographical entry:
Cummins, Thomas. “Images for a New World.” In The Virgin, Saints, and Angels, edited by Suzanne Stratton-Pruitt, 13-17. New York: Skira editore, 2006.
And here is a footnote:
Thomas Cummins. “Images for a New World.” In The Virgin, Saints, and Angels, edited by Suzanne Stratton-Pruitt, 13-17 (14). New York: Skira editore, 2006.
Append illustrations to your paper. Do not include illustrations with the text. Put them on separate pages afterwards. (This is because, when you publish, the editor and/or compositor, not you, decide precisely where the illustrations go, so you supply them as a group.) Neatly arrange as many clearly legible illustrations as you like (within reason) on each page. Include only the illustration, with no extraneous material, and a caption you write yourself, according to the following, very simple format:
Fig. 1. Albrecht Dürer, Scourging of Christ, Great Passion, Basel, 1511.
In other words, you number each illustration as a figure and then indicate the name of the artist, name of the work (painting, print, etc.), title of the book in which it appears (if applicable), place of publication (if applicable), and the date.
If the illustration is not taken from a book, it’s even simpler:
Fig. 2. Titian, Venus of Urbino, 1538.
Or:
Fig. 3. Palladio, Villa Rotonda, Vicenza, 1566-1571.
Finally, include a Bibliography, which should also follow the Chicago/Turabian format.
If you can, simply staple your pages together and hand the paper in. If the paper is particularly thick, put everything in a pocket folder.
Please note that I am unimpressed by “interesting” fonts or other visual effects. The content, the quality of the writing, and the attention to detail as outlined are what counts!
