In the wake of numerous grisly school shootings that have shocked the nation, lawmakers, school administrators, officials and media have all rushed to propose solutions intended to reduce the gun- related carnage that have devastated campuses across the US.
The authors of the assigned readings on pp. 609-632 in Practical Argument argue their divergent views regarding the best course of action to ensure campus safety in the present era of school shootings.
Carefully and critically review the essays and write a 6-8-page Proposal Argument in response to the following question: Should we arm campus personnel and students as a solution to the problem of recurring school shootings that have plagued our nation?
Thesis: We should not arm school personnel and students because it would only increase gun related deaths, place undue burden on the already cash-strapped US education system and lead to other related problems (list all problems that you will be discussing in the body).
Be sure to make use of the many available resources (8 or more – 5hree from outside sources) and data related to the assigned thesis.
I. Description of the Assignment:
This assignment requires that you write a developed Proposal Argument (1,500- 2,000 words). The paper should demonstrate your ability to comprehend a claim use external sources to support the position of your thesis.
• You will need to use data and information from reliable sources (5 outside sources minimum) for this paper and use the MLA method for formatting and citation to identify all the sources.
• Your paper should have an introduction examining the problem and proposed or already implemented solutions with a thesis statement at the end (your proposal and possible benefits related to your chosen course of action. of reasons position on the topic), body paragraphs that support your position, and a conclusion. The thesis statement should be clearly expressed at the end of the introduction and should list the possible benefits of your proposed action. The body paragraphs will develop points that support your position. Your support should include fully explained reasons why and how your proposal suggests the best possible course of action.
• The objective of your argument is to convince your audience of the problem, confront the opposing view (opponents’ proposals) and present your solution. Ultimately, you must persuade the reader to agree with the position you have taken regarding the viability of the proponents’ proposals.
• The essay must have a title and be written according to Standard American English.
• Avoid making generalizations, and assume that your reader may disagree with your point of view.
• Your paper should be proofread for grammatical and spelling errors before it is turned in.
Be logical and reasonable. Use available external resources, data and thoughtful examples. Be concrete, and explain your views thoroughly. Write in a professional manner.
Organizing Your Essay
Introduction:
• Introduce the general topic and identify the problems of school shootings in the US and the response that arming academic personnel and students as a method of reducing gun related deaths on campuses is the solution.
• Identify all stakeholders or interested parties involved in this issue and some debates that are ongoing.
• Explain the immensity of the problem (you may introduce data to show this), and the possible consequences if it is not solved.
• Briefly introduce some arguments of those who oppose arming school and college personnel.
• Introduce some arguments of those who propose arming school and college personnel.
• State your thesis/ position that professors, staff and students should not be armed and state the reasons. List the negative consequences or outcomes you will be addressing, including all parties who would be harmed if your opponents’ proposed course of action were to be pursued.
Body Paragraphs: Support your position: use examples, evidence and facts to support your points. Be sure to construct a coherent, well developed and persuasive argument.
Note* All facts, and arguments must be supported by outside research (No personal opinions allowed). You must use at least eight sources (five from outside the textbook).
Introduce each separate point of discussion with a topic sentence identifying the supporting point. Explain your point, provide specific example/s. Always link the examples to your main point.
You must provide opposing views (at least three rebuttals) and your refutation of those views.
3. Conclusion: Wrap up the main points of the discussion; perhaps lead the reader with a new idea to think about. Suggest a more appropriate course of action in response to school shootings. Be sure to re-state your thesis in a new way.
4. Works Cited Page: A listing all sources in alphabetical order (MLA format) must be attached to your paper. This page should not be counted as a part of the essay.
