An example of successive generations that have created new S-curves can be found in the way we view movies at home. First, there was the projector. When this reached its technological maturity, the video player became the next generation. In turn, the video player reached its technological maturity when the DVD player became the dominant design for the home movie enthusiast.

A new technology was involved with each successive generation (S-curve). The projector uses spools of film and projects an image onto a screen using a bright light bulb. The video player uses magnetic tape to store digital information that is sent via wire to a television screen. The DVD player uses a laser to read a disc and sends digital information to a television screen. Each technology displayed improvements in performance and each technology reached a point of maturity.
