Journal Entry, topic:
The topic of your Journal Entry this week is the Gospel of Matthew.
YOU HAVE THREE GOALS
1) Show me that you understand Matthew’s theme of Higher Righteousness. HINT: WHAT IS THE CONTROLLING IDEA BEHIND JESUS’ SERMON ON THE MOUNT IN CH. 5-7.
2) Show me how Matthew understands the process of forgiveness? HINT: TAKE A LOOK AT CHAPTER 18.
With both of these goals, it might be helpful to use our story structure to analyze the narrative.
Stories begin with a protagonist who wants something: what sort of community does Jesus seek to create? (The Kingdom of God will look like what when it arrives?) This goes to the question of Higher Righteousness.
There are potential obstacles or threats in the way: what type of evil keeps us from participating in God’s kingdom? (Hint: Why does Jesus attack the Pharisees?)
Jesus responds to these obstacles by doing something new: what makes our participation in God’s kingdom possible? This goes to the question of forgiveness.
3) Read the attached article on “The Politics of Forgiveness” and apply what you have learned above about higher righteousness and forgiveness to the following case study: Let’s pretend that for the last few weeks and unbeknownst to you, Sarah has been talking with the other members of the class and putting you down, actually saying really horrible things about you. Maybe she is jealous, but whatever her motive, she has told your classmates that she saw you cheating on a quiz. As a result most of the other students have stopped responding to your posts on the discussion board. One of your other classmates, a friend who knows you are innocent, has just now told you what has been going on.
Okay, given what you’ve learned from Matthew and the article, “Politics of Forgiveness,” what do you do? What steps need to be taken for Christian forgiveness to occur here? CAUTION: BE SURE TO DEFINE FORGIVENESS. IT DOES NOT MEAN OVERCOMING ANGER!

Journal Entry, guidelines:
A Journal Entry is actually a short paper. The goal of the entry is to demonstrate that you have done the reading assignments and grappled with understanding them. Your journal entry counts as your entire grade for the week, so spend time reading and reflecting before writing. The link for your Journal is located to the left. Open the specific journal link and click on “Create Journal Entry.”
It is wise to write the journal entry in a Word document first, and then copy and paste the text, NOT the file, into your Blackboard Journal when you are finished. Please DO NOT upload the original docx file! Please DO separate your paragraphs into appropriate reading blocks.
Please read the journal assignment carefully. Often students will get a lower grade simply because they didn’t take the time to read the journal assignment thoroughly. Remember, other than using our course readings, including discussion Wrap Ups, the journals do not require outside resources. They are not expected to be research projects. That said, if you do consult any additional sources, you must cite them. Also cite everything you use from our textbook, Bible, or course materials. Even if you restate or paraphrase a source, you must cite anything that is not original to you. (You can use end of sentence parenthetical citations for our textbook or my instructor’s comments.)
Please see your syllabus to understand how I grade the journal entries, but briefly, I want you to have a particular focus/thesis and to engage the biblical text and our course readings and text (including my instructor’s comments). In other words I want informed opinions, not unreflective or unsupported opinions.
The length of the entry is to be about 500 words, excluding quotations: 2-3 pages double spaced. Quality counts more than quantity. Remember, I’m looking for you to demonstrate to me that you’ve done the reading assignment for the week and that you’ve struggled to understand it.
The Journal Entry is due by this Saturday night at midnight. (Again, your Journal Entry is your participation grade for this week, and it is also used to record this week’s attendance.)
