Article Response Guidelines for EED 681: Spring 2020
Objective: Writing multiple responses to academic literature gives you an opportunity to practice reading, summarizing and synthesizing the key arguments presented in the literature.
Guidelines: Over the course of this semester, you will be writing 10 short papers (2pgs) on 10 articles, all of which discuss the value of incorporating children’s literature into the classroom. Each response should be written following the examples provided in class, and which are exemplified by the following elements:
1st section: Introduction to main topic, title and author(s) of article, importance of topic, and thesis. (What problem does the author identify? Who might this problem relate to? What are the complexities of this issue? )
Transition statement to following sections.
2nd section: Introduce and elaborate on 1st point of evidence in the article that supports thesis.
3rd section: Introduce and elaborate on 2nd point of evidence in the article that supports thesis.
4th section: Introduce and elaborate on 3rd point of evidence in the article that supports thesis.
5th section: Synthesize 3 points of evidence into a cohesive statement. What do these 3 points tell us about the topic and how to they support the thesis? (What are the intentions of the author? What does the author want the reader to think?)
6th section: Concluding statements. For instance:
What do you already know about this topic? How is the reading different or similar to what you already know?
What experiences do you have which may support, confound, or refute the information presented from this reading assignment?
What information from this reading selection resonates with, and contributes to your interest in teaching and/or learning?
