Essay guidelines:
Write an essay about your chosen work of art or architecture that describes its meaning and function to the original audiences who saw and used the work. You will want to examine the work’s original site and location, its patrons and initial audiences, as well as general information about the belief systems, ways of life, or social and political events of the period or region.

1. Original location (country, city, site, building or type of building, if known)
2. Patron (if the specific patron in unknown, try to identify or speculate what class or type of person made the work)
3. Reason the work was commissioned
4. Function of the work (often same as #3)
5. Relationship of work to prevailing social, economic, political and religious conditions
6. Relationship of work to prevailing artistic trends, styles and practices

Organize essay into the standard structure of an introduction ending with a thesis, body paragraphs that each start with a topic sentence, and a conclusion.
Do not wait until the conclusion to analyze, analyze throughout the essay.
Keep your focus on the original audiences for the work (not on later additions to the art work, or modern discoveries and uses for the work)
The original Greek sculpture was made by the Hellenistic King who established his capital in Pergamon, King Attalos c. 220 BCE. The Roman copy then, if it was indeed commissioned by Julius Caesar, was made c. 50 BCE. So the Roman copy was made 170 years after the original bronze.
IMPORTANT – FROM PROFESSOR
You can tackle the work either as the original Greek, or as Caesar’s Roman copy, but you should not do both. I am not sure where Caesar’s copy was located, but it was NOT in Pergamon Turkey, but more likely in Rome, which was Caesar’s capital. (If you do want to choose the Roman copy, you could speculate that it was done by Caesar and write your essay assuming this and it would be an interesting research project to research Caesar!)
