Directions: Write a response paper using one of these three fictional “texts” – two novels and one television show. A Journal of a Plague is by Daniel Dafoe. Love at the time of Cholera is by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. “Quarantine” is Episode 6 from Season 1 of Eight is Enough, an American television comedy-drama series that ran on ABC from March 15, 1977 until May 23, 1981. Your paper needs 3 parts, described below.
Pick one ideological perspective from below, and describe the things one would notice about each text, if s/he were primarily viewing each with that group’s lenses in his/her glasses: New Historicist, Feminist, Critical Race Theorist (e.g. African Americanist), Marxist or Capitalist, American Conservative or Liberal, Animal Rights Activist, Musicologist, or Birth Order Psychologist. In other words, start this last section with a phrase like, “If a —ist were highlighting ways this text spoke to his or her school of thought, s/he might notice a few things related to plot, characters, setting, or theme (how things turn out for the main character in relation to his society’s expectations or rules for individuals or groups).” Some of the “lenses” listed are specifically literary, while others are political and yet others are just fun. It’s up to you to pick one, but you must find at least two critics – experts in that school of thought / way of looking at things – who you can quote. You may use articles from class or new material by those authors that you find online (e.g., writings that are by William F. Buckley, bell hooks, Harold Bloom, Imani Perry, Kevin Wilson, Karl Marx, etc.).
Content Points 70:
Your main goal is to compose a 4-5 page paper with the parts listed above; supporting paragraphs; and a conclusion. It must use MLA style quotations and citations.
Your secondary goal is to demonstrate a writing process that shows evidence of brainstorming/prewriting, drafting and revision.
Finally, you must demonstrate engagement in peer editing – in this case, both a) sharing page one of your paper with a classmate, and b) proof that you commented on his/hers in exchange.
MLA Format Points 25:
Correct heading with paper title; Times 12 font; double line spaced body; Last Name and page number at top right for page 2 on.
Indent paragraphs (which need a topic sentence and supporting sentences)
Capitalization, spelling, and correct text features matter (esp. quotations around chapters and episodes, versus just capitalizing, italicizing, or underlining the novel’s or show’s title that the chapter or episode falls within). Remember my adage, “Short things get short marks, whereas long things get underlined or the equivalent italics (or just proper capitalization).”
Transitional phrases that link paragraphs one to the next (First, second, repeating a phrase or idea that you’re continuing between paragraphs, In conclusion)
MLA style quotations that are introduced, bound by beginning and end quotation marks, tagged with a citation in parentheses – either (Author Last Name page #) or just (page #) – followed by an end punctuation mark like a period. Look up alternatives on Purdue Owl/MLA, if your source is, for example, not a book with an author but is instead a web article without an author’s name attached.
