Assignment: Using William Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of Hamlet as their primary source, students will write about their newfound understanding of the tragic play. Students will take a position as it relates to the following choice of topics and develop an analytical argument appropriate to the assignment:
What is the major conflict seen in this play: Man vs. Nature, Man vs. Society, Man vs. Man, Man vs. Self?
“It’s complicated.” Discuss Hamlet’s relationship with Ophelia. How does the way he treats her speaks to Shakespeare’s characterization of him?
Trace the different forms of irony found in the play? For example, verbal irony, dramatic irony, irony of the situation. How does Shakespeare use irony as a tool to shape the play?
One major theme in Hamlet is action. Discuss how it is illustrated in the play. Hint: Analyze the “To Be or Not to Be” soliloquy.
Explore some of the symbolism related to death in the play and explain how they carry meaning beyond the literal.
Objective: This essay will demonstrate your ability to manage paragraph and essay structure, citing primary and secondary research sources, developing a Works Cited page and develop a thesis, introductory and closing paragraphs, as well as paragraph and essay structure showing evidence of editing and revision. It will also demonstrate your ability to incorporate one to two documented sources (in addition to a primary source) into your essay using MLA guidelines.
Requirements and Format:
· Paper length: 5 –7 double-spaced and typed pages using Times New Roman 12pt. font black only
· Include a Works Cited page for documentation and use M.L.A. Style with all citations (see textbook)
· At least one authoritative source should be used and properly documented in a Works Cited page
· Documented paper should include an introduction (with a clear thesis statement) and conclusion.
· Plagiarized papers will result in a failing grade and may result in failure of the class.
