When we look at the cultures covered in this course we can see how different forms of representation traveled and influenced each other. For example, the legacy of Rome looms large over the art of the Medieval period.

Pick 2 objects, each from a different module covered in the second half of the course and document such examples of influence.

1. We have seen the relationship between religion and art since the dawn of art in the Stone Age. Art is a very important determinant of how different societies work and worship in our modern society. Art is meant to represent one ‘s beliefs and during reading we can see that the various periods of time offer different kinds of art and representation of each religion.

One of the earliest indications of this is with the the paintings in the cave of Lascaux. The animal paintings on the walls were thought to be considered deities, though there are arguments against it.

There’s a picture of two statuettes worshiping their gods from Eshnunna ‘s Square Temple, going into summer times. They are shown standing, holding beakers with their hands and extended eyes. The widened eyes symbolize the unending faith in their prayers and gods. The cups in their hands were used to pour one out for libations in honor of the gods. Many of these statuettes had inscriptions on them that they also named a particular god. An early Egyptian civilization, because their society was so focused on both, represents one of the best relationship between art and gods. Their culture was rich in art and religion and still is rich. The Pyramids of Giza are the most famous and well-known work of art from that period. Although it is architecture, it is also art. The Egyptians found a way to show in an excellent way the importance of their faiths. So any company before them, Grander. These were symbols of the sun and the god of the sun Re. These were pyramids. Not only were these pyramids buildings full of doves, leading to morgue temples. It held art, clothes, drinks, gold, etc., not only people.

It is impossible to describe the development of art and religion in three images. We can begin to understand, however, the importance of this relationship to this day. We could not see with our own eyes the various gods, ways of worship, and the societal progress that took place throughout history without art and visual representation. These works of art have shaped contemporary society so that without them we are not near the same.

2. As we move past ancient Greek and Etruscan art in time, we welcome the ancient civilizations and time periods of magnificent art pieces in ancient Rome and Medieval Europe. Art has evolved drastically throughout centuries and by these times, art wasn’t just painted or sculpted, they were implemented in actual objects like buildings, doors, amphitheaters, etc. As art has taken many new forms but kept the majestic antiquity in its ability to tell stories and narratives.

The first piece of art I’d like to discuss is the Bernward Doors from the year 1015 that came out of Medieval Europe. They were made for the Hildesheim Cathederal (Links to an external site.)and sanctioned by St. Bernward of Hildesheim who got inspired in his pilgrimage to Rome. The doors were cast using the lost wax process and carved throughout are a number of biblical images and stories. The left side of the door shows the narratives from the Book of Genesis while the right side depicts the life of Jesus Christ. The narratives shown on the doors are simple but have so much meaning behind them, showing how those images say much more than words. It depicts the murder Adam, The Crucifixion, The Temptation of in the Garden of Eden, as well as other hugely sacred narratives.

Another art piece I admire that tells multiple stories in a visual medium is the famous Colosseum in Rome built in 70-80 AD under the Roman emperor Vespasian. I think this masterpiece tells a narrative through the actual architecture and what it means. The most famous uses of the amphitheater were the battles between gladiators, executions, and even housing at one point in the Medieval Times. Although this was not the first building with special meaning or a narrative behind it, it certainly is one of the most recognizable structures of all time. As a result of fine design, architecture, and uses of the Colosseum, you can not look at the building and not immediately think of all the stories it holds on its grounds.

The narratives in art evolved and developed into more complex, yet simpler designs and architecture. Through centuries and different civilizations, it continued to grow and expand beyond paintings or simple carvings, but the mysterious and wondrous antiquity remained through the narratives and special meanings behind these art pieces. It has opened up a world of different and unique ways to tell narratives through art that shaped how we look at, and even consider, art today..
